2024 Winter works parties

Well, we are nearly there, and I am beginning to feel a buzz around the club. I am pleased to say this season we will be welcoming even more new faces to the fleet. I am also pleased that so many of the jobs on the jobs-to-do list have been ticked off. Sunday mornings have been busy with volunteers; painting, cleaning, repairing, shovelling, and generally getting our club maintained in the usual busy Porthpean way.

I was concerned when I took on commander-in-chief of works roll. Concerned my qualifications as a have-a-go-Jo DIYer would find me wanting. I shouldn’t have worried. People turned up, checked the to do list, rolled their sleeves up and got on with the jobs that suited their skills best. Here I would like to extend a huge thank you, to all who dedicated so much time and effort for our club.

The major projects are well under way. The decking area extension is awaiting an extra piece of safety railing and timber to make a wider bar area above.  I think with bar stools and a new eight-seater bench, plus our original table and bench, it will be party time on Sunday afternoons. So, with this extra space let’s hope for sunny days. Speaking of which, Andrew could do with a few of those in order to get the new boatshed in the field project underway. Despite the rainy days he has managed to get the hardcore and shuttering for the concrete base in (watch this space).

If you have been to a jazz concert, you will know how this ends. I would like a round of applause for Ken F on bar purge,     Colin W on timings and directions, Jeremy T on galley purge, Brian P on tank fix, Tony D on paint and scrape,  Paul S on blocks, and Mike V on slabs, Jan B and Catherine S on gate scrub, Andrew K on tractor and digger, Pete K on bench rub, Stacey on board and beam, Paul H on levels, Alex R on stomp and rake,    Paddy S on tubular.  Also, not to be forgotten, the ‘gritty choir’ who awaited their moment, but made a swinging harmony with shovel and broom when it arrived. Thanks to all of you, and I am sorry if you deserved a mention and missed out – get your own back on the water.
